The founder and Creative Director of 5W Infographics, he was the Art Director of National Geographic magazine from 2008 to 2014. Previously, he worked as a graphics artist for El Mundo in Spain and as the Graphics Art Director of The New York Times. In 2002, he co-founded the infographics and consulting company 5W Infographics, which is based in New York City, Washington DC and Madrid.
Juan has won over fifty Society for News Design awards, ten Malofiej awards (including the Best of Show Award), as well as awards from the Society of Publication Design and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist as part of a team of writers and visual journalists of The New York Times.
Juan is the author of Look Inside, a compilation of the best cutaway and cross-section infographics published worldwide by Gestalten Books.
Juan’s infographics clients include National Geographic, The New York Times, Scientific American, Unicef, The Economist, Nikon, ExxonMobil, The American Museum of natural History and more. As a consultant, Juan does workshops and graphics stylebooks and has helped restructure infographics departments around the world, including Le Monde (France) and many others.
